The Fire

by Nolini Kant Gupta

The Fire shines there, but burns not...
It burns when it descends here below
And lies imprisoned in the crust of earth:
Then its tongues leap out in red-hot wrath
And consume the narrowing barriers
And the entrenched darkness.

The work done, it regains its own natural and superior self,
The keen and serene substance of Bliss that it is,
The solar light with the soul of the Moon's concentrated ecstasy.

The Fire burns -
It burns the dross, but illumines the core of gold;
It tears and tortures the obdurate and the unwilling,
It tones and braces the docile nd the willing.
It is the pure energy of the Gods,
The clear knowledge that fashoins bodies ofdelight.
But the unregenerate flesh
And the self-will of Ignorance
Feel it as the dread devouring Flame.
