HIS
BODY, THE SYMBOL OF THE UNIVERSE
His monolithic limbs of flame's quintessence
Shadowless stand upon eternity's peak-
The burning symbol of the vast universe,
With feet that feel the lightless base of Abyss
And tread the black avenues of changeless death,
With head of diamond-tranquillity of trance
Piercing the sky's mask of mighty solitude.
His limbs are the spaceless grounds of the Inane ;
His limbs are the timeless path of the Infinite ;
His body is the wide cosmic plenitude
That bears the suns, that bears transcendent Sleep.
Unknown to the earth is His altitude-heart;
Unknown to us is the pinnacle of His thought
That no mortal measure can ever span or gauge.
We but feel the luminous cataract of His grace,
The unborn stress of His perennial might
That sweeps our hearts, enlivens our time-born sense,
But cannot gaze the immensity of His sun
That abides with us, a living golden god.
For his limbs are the icon of creation's space,
Each an aureate whole, permanent, free.
His feet are the symbols of our fallen drowse
That, unknown, have touched the mire of oblivion ;
His knees mirror the vague humanity's search,
The masked cry of clay to firmaments divine;
Rising to his majestic loins of light
We front His heaven's unbarred puissance-seas
That bear our earth's aspiration's upwardness
And armour our souls against the cuts of fate.
This
was his effulgent navel of shining surprise,
The root of all powers, the source of mights,
The giant grandeur-dominion of gods.
Higher, unreached by the blind feet of dust
Is the flaming crystal kingdom of His heart,
The miracle expanse of compassion's vastitude,
The primal loneliness of the Mother-blaze.
Here She sits sovereign, an empress of the Peak
Beyond the unchartered terrains of the mind,
Beyond the limitless regions of the soul,
Beyond the spirit-vistas of manifest shape,
Alone sharing the wizard-stillness of His heart.
Beyond is His thunder's uncompanioned seat,
The primeval zone of His magnificent voice,
The original cliff of all-revealing Word.
Still above is His vast and unbearable Sun,
The oae kingship's pinnacle where all are one,
From where He leaned down to the pit of His feet;
Here darkness cannot be, no night can live. ,
Here He is alone with His Unmeasured Self.
But on His white head unimaginable
Stupendous, mateless, august, immaculate,
Are poised the triple eternities of His crown.
Grandiose, high, He sees the play of His limbs,
Aloof with high inscrutable Eye of Fire.
